Towns Named Clay

Henry Clay was one of the candidates for President who never made it into the Office. His house Ashland in Lexington, Kentucky, was famous and his name was well-known. Two aspects of his name that remain undeveloped were how many towns named Clayton there were that were named after him and the material clay itself. Today I will deal with clay and another day I will list towns named Clayton, like the famous suburb of St. Louis that was named for Ralph Clay.

There are 14 towns named Clay scattered about. There is a town named Clay in Virginia, for example. There were many houses made of brick in this colony in the 17th century. There are towns named Clay in Texas and Pennsylvania with active populations and counties named for Henry Clay. Clay, CA, exists with more than a thousand people and active artists modeling in clay. There are Clays in Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri, and New York. All these towns named Clay mean that much more is named for Henry Clay than people realize. Clay, West Virginia, has an active population of 399 people. However, Clayton, MO was named for Ralph Clay, who was born in Virginia. I will develop this connection later that remains ambiguous at best.

Lonnie Hammargren

I am a bit sad to report the death of this Las Vegas fixture. Lonnie was among the most talented confidence men in history. I was delighted to meet him several years ago when Ruth and I paid 40 dollars each to tour his home Castillo del Sol in Las Vegas. I was not a bit surprised to learn that he was featured on the series Hoarders at the time. Lonnie apparently died on June 13, 2023, at the age of 85. Lonnie had himself buried in a sarcophagus in his garage. This was a fitting coffin and death.

Inside his home in Las Vegas was a Liberace staircase, Danny Kaye, the world’s most overdecorated elephant, and a complete Stratosphere roller coaster. It was an unusual tour and not soon forgotten. I remember thinking at the time that this home had the makings of the ultimate Las Vegas museum. Lonnie will not soon be forgotten.
