Towns Named Philadelphia

I admit to a weakness when it comes to this subject. I’m sure that the next time I will cover towns named Philadelphia even better because I will have seen more Philadelphias on the map.

What I know for sure is that there are more than these Philadelphias around despite the mega city in Pennsylvania that inspired it way back when it was named by William PENN as the City of Brotherly Love. There are some great attractions there now including its art museum made famous by the boxer named Rocky who was photographed running up its steps. There are Philadelphias for sure in Illinois and Indiana. I’m certain that Mississippi has the largest town with this name in America. Philadelphia became the capital of the colony. Towns named Philadelphia are the only towns that count this time. There are reportedly small towns named Philadelphia in Alabama, Arkansas, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia with this name. #2 is the Philadelphia in New York State with only 1,252 people. The English finally conquered it in 1664, and almost 20 years later King Charles II granted the land to the colony as payment for the debt.

The name got its start when the city of Amman, the capital of Jordan, was named. The state of Pennsylvania even has a county with the name Philadelphia that counts 152,600,000 inhabitants today to become the largest city with that name in it. The only town that I was able to find on a map is the Philadelphia in the state of Mississippi with a large population of only 7,477 people. It is the largest town named Philadelphia around. Tomorrow I will deal with towns named Centerville. There are said to be 47 of them.

The name Philadelphia got its start when Amman, the capital of Jordan, was called Philadelphia many generations ago. It was even the capital of Jordan during the Roman Era when it was one of the most continuously inhabited cities in the world. The colony of Pennsylvania got its start and South Africa, Germany, and England became rulers there eventually.

Towns Named Carthage

There are apparently 16 towns in America named Carthage. This is not so surprising because Carthage was in Tunisia and a rival to Rome. This city was founded in the 9th century before Christ and was a powerful, Mediterranean naval power against the older and richer control of Rome to the north of it. Only one town named Carthage in America has gone out of existence and become a ghost town. It used to be a coal mining town in New Mexico.

There are older towns named Carthage in America. There is one is Arkansas near Tulip south of Little Rock, for example, and there is a Carthage near yet another Morristown and not too far from Indianapolis in Indiana. Over 900 people live there. It is not too far to Carthage, Indiana, where more than 900 people live south of Indianapolis. More than 2,600 people live in Carthage, Illinois, 15 miles from Keokuk, Iowa.

The Carthage in Kentucky is now unincorporated south of Cincinnati. There are Carthages in Mississippi and Missouri not too far from Joplin and Jackson where Carthage is a stand alone community north of Mississippi’s capital.

New York State has a Carthage near Watertown and the richly named town of Philadelphia nearby has a Carthage where more than 3,500 people live. The Carthaginians in North Carolina are the hardest to find until you realize it’s a neighborhood in a larger town, as is the Carthage in Cincinnati.

There are only 127 people living in Carthage, South Dakota. There are towns named Carthage in Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia too.

Glenn Close Oscars

Yesterday, Ruth and I began to wonder how many times this actress has been nominated for an Oscar and lost. The answer is 8 times, making her the least successful nominee in Oscar history. We began in early afternoon to watch her unseen Oscar nominated performances with Albert Nobbs and ended with The World According to Garp in early evening. In between we watched The Wife and and Fatal Attraction.

Four Glenn Close movies were watched entirely and judged. Our favorite was Alfred Nobbs and Garp was our least liked. It was quite a day. We did not see Hillbilly Elegy, The Natural, The Big Chill, or Dangerous Liasions. She received four best actress nominations over that time and four supporting Oscar nods but she never won. Maybe next time will be hers. She is scheduled to make that movie in the future and she deserves an Oscar!

George Clinton

George Clinton never owned slaves. He was the unknown Founding Father who served President Thomas Jefferson as Vice President and served 6 terms as Governor of New York State.

George Clinton (part 1)

Congress ratified the Constitution without changes. When several of the larger states threatened to reject it, they were invited to ratify its main body. However, they attached several amendments to it. They submitted them reduced to 12 by James Madison. Ten of them were approved and ratified creating the Bill of RIghts.

The Governor of New York, a man named George Clinton, joined them and went on to serve six terms. He became Governor of New York for six terms and became for all practical purposes the 5th Founding Father. His name was George Clinton. The current Governor is a woman named Kathy Hochul. George Clinton and his wife had 6 children. He became its longest serving Governor after emigrating from Ireland. He was opposed to the English King, supported the Constitution when it was needed, took the oath of office, and resigned from the militia. He became New York’s longest serving Governor and served as Vice President.

The 2nd book.

THe 2nd book I really enjoyed reading while taking a break went by the title All the Beauty in the World. Iy. It made me wonder who is reading all of these publications about art and culture in a world where so much is on the minds of people. They fear war, an elusive, unstable economy,…

Travel to Missouri

Missouri probably has more diversity in its names for places than most other states. In counties it has a TEXAS County, an OREGON County, and a DALLAS County. It has names for large cities in the USA. It has a HOUSTON, a MEMPHIS, and a PORTLAND. It has mythological and biblical towns including a CAANAN,…

Towns With Foreign Names, Part 2

There is a town called Palma Sola in Florida with a population of 3,100. It is unincorporated despite having been around since 1884. It was begun by a firearms maker who didn’t live long after moving to Florida. Jennie Kidd Trout, the first female doctor in Canada, lived there after retiring , but she died…
