I admit to a weakness when it comes to this subject. I’m sure that the next time I will cover towns named Philadelphia even better because I will have seen more Philadelphias on the map.
What I know for sure is that there are more than these Philadelphias around despite the mega city in Pennsylvania that inspired it way back when it was named by William PENN as the City of Brotherly Love. There are some great attractions there now including its art museum made famous by the boxer named Rocky who was photographed running up its steps. There are Philadelphias for sure in Illinois and Indiana. I’m certain that Mississippi has the largest town with this name in America. Philadelphia became the capital of the colony. Towns named Philadelphia are the only towns that count this time. There are reportedly small towns named Philadelphia in Alabama, Arkansas, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia with this name. #2 is the Philadelphia in New York State with only 1,252 people. The English finally conquered it in 1664, and almost 20 years later King Charles II granted the land to the colony as payment for the debt.
The name got its start when the city of Amman, the capital of Jordan, was named. The state of Pennsylvania even has a county with the name Philadelphia that counts 152,600,000 inhabitants today to become the largest city with that name in it. The only town that I was able to find on a map is the Philadelphia in the state of Mississippi with a large population of only 7,477 people. It is the largest town named Philadelphia around. Tomorrow I will deal with towns named Centerville. There are said to be 47 of them.
The name Philadelphia got its start when Amman, the capital of Jordan, was called Philadelphia many generations ago. It was even the capital of Jordan during the Roman Era when it was one of the most continuously inhabited cities in the world. The colony of Pennsylvania got its start and South Africa, Germany, and England became rulers there eventually.
