Movies are increasingly being made all over the world. In fact, cities and countries are becoming film stars. Most American films today are made with their foreign money-making potential uppermost in studios’ minds. As of November 20, 2016, American movies have grossed $662 million this year in Brazil. In order, the top 3 movie money-makers in Russia were Zootopia, The Secret Life of Pets, and Suicide Squad. “Zootopia” was also the top film in China, which strictly limits the number of U.S. films that can be exhibited. American films have earned $1.25 BILLION this year in China.
Many world countries have their own movie industries–England, France, Australia, etc. A film that just opened in the Unites States that looks like it will do well is Toni Erdmann. It was made in Germany. It’s a German COMEDY. Far more movies are made in India every year than in America.
Films are increasingly being made in unusual places. According to Variety, up and coming countries include Thailand, Croatia, Colombia, etc. The Martian, which starred Matt Damon, was made in HUNGARY. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was partially shot in Iceland, where filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur is building a TV village outside Reykjavik.
So many movies are made in Nigeria each year that they don’t need American films to help the domestic box office. It’s estimated that Nollywood, the nickname for the Nigerian film industry, makes about 50 movies EACH WEEK. Not surprisingly, American films don’t do especially well in the Middle East. However, The Jungle Book did OK in Qatar, where this year’s American film box office exceed $34 million. In the United Arab Emirates, American movies have grossed $193 million so far in 2016. Finding Dory is a huge international hit.
One of the most successful franchises in movie history, the fast and furious series, is working on its 8th. In fact, it will probably be called Fast 8 when released. It shot in a location where American movies have not been made for more than half a century. Its six months of shooting created 300+ jobs. Fast 8 was made in CUBA.
